So, I have a certain love/fascination with vampires. This mainly revolves around my delight in Dracula. Don't get me wrong; ghosts, skeletons, werewolves, zombies, I love them all. It's just that vampires have a special stake in my heart.
So, as writing goes, what makes a vampire story? Well, I'm no expert on the romantic aspect, which seems to be a large draw for many. I think Anne Rice and her Vampire Chronicles is usually credited as the big influence here, and of course, Twilight, when I was a wee lad, was the most popular iteration of the romantic vampire story.
Leaving that genre aside for those who love it and know it, there is the other extreme, the violent and animalistic vampires which have now mostly morphed into zombies. A good inflection point might be I Am Legend by Richard Matheson which is a zombie story in everything but name and a few aesthetics, for the monsters are generally called vampires and have traditional vampire weaknesses like running water, mirrors, and garlic, as well as having more of a taste for blood than for flesh. (Side note: This may be the first time that I know of where the idea of a vampire's reaction to Christian symbols is challenged by a Jew turned into a vampire who laughs at a crucifix.) I am not a fan of graphic novels and haven't read 30 Days of Night, but from what I understand of the plot, this might be a modern example of the more violent vampires, so the genre has not been totally subsumed into the zombie story.
Well, those are two extremes, two major aspects, of vampire stories. Both, I think, valid. There's one more I want to consider: the problem of being a vampire. This can sometimes get a bad rap as being overly angsty, a mopey vampire, yet, for me, I find it one of my favorite facets. In Dracula, there is a fear of Mina turning into a vampire, but she, in the midst of this, develops some sympathy for our bloody fiend. Hunting him down almost becomes an errand of mercy, not just for the sake for Mina, but for Dracula as well.

That's all good fun, but it's not exactly what I love about vampires. There has to be some middle ground between these two extremes. There comes to mind a book series I read as a child, well, started as a child. The books were so slow to come out, I had to finish the last one when I was admittedly a little too old to fully appreciate it. It had both of these extremes: there were the romantic "will they won't they" plots as well as entire towns being sucked dry of blood by marauding vampires; there was the vampire lady drinking blood like wine as well as the vampire brut tearing people limb from limb.
